Tina Louise, the last surviving cast member of the 1960s sitcom, Gilligan’s Island, was never interested in appearing in any of the Gilligan’s reunion movies or shows. She spoke out many times about her reasons, which were that she felt that the role of “Ginger Grant” had typecast her and that being on the show had devastated her career. To make sure that producers got the point, when asked to reprise her “Ginger” role, Louise requested a huge sum of money that she knew they would never pay.
Despite refusing to participate in Gilligan’s Island reunions, when co-star Dawn Wells died of Covid in 2020, Louise had kinder words for her time on the show, saying, “ …I loved doing my part, especially after they really started writing for my character, originally billed as a ‘Marilyn Monroe’ type of character. A different director took over and really started to write for my character. I really loved my character.” Perhaps Dawn Wells’ death had made her nostalgic.
Unlike her fellow Gilligan’s Island alumnae, Tina Louise saw herself as a serious actress who could have had a successful cinematic career had she not been sidelined by playing the sexy red-headed siren marooned on a tropical island. Still, the typecasting didn’t stop her from moving forward with her life. Following the cancellation of the show in 1967, Louise continued to appear in movie roles (The Wrecking Crew, The Stepford Wives, Johnny Suede), performed in theater, became an advocate for children’s literacy, wrote children’s books, and taught yoga. She is 90 years old.
