This is Tangerine, my 8 year old corn snake. She’s a very docile snake who most people, upon meeting her, agree is quite ‘cute’ for a snake, if you’re someone who could consider a snake cute. In the 8 years that I’ve had her, Tangerine has only escaped her enclosure twice. The first time, we found her wrapped around some computer cords within a few hours of her escape.
When a corn snake escapes, most snake experts will advise to ‘look up’, as corn snakes will tend to seek out something they can climb upwards, even if it leads no where. The second time that Tangerine escaped happened to coincide with the day that I chose to open the window near her enclosure (which rarely gets opened). We were almost certain that, feeling the warmth of the sun’s ray’s outside, she might have decided to ally-oop right out of the house.
Using my snake wrangling knowledge I left out some heat pads and water, to attempt to draw her out just in case she was in the house or decided to return. A week went by and Tangerine was no where to be found. By this point I presumed she really was outside(and wouldn’t survive much longer, because snakes really aren’t very smart). This is the creepy part. Now, I’ve never been afraid of my snake or other (reasonably sized, non-venomous) snakes. The following morning,
as I was laying in bed, I heard a sneezing sound. Looking around to the edge of my bed (which sits 1.5 feet from Tangerine’s snake enclosure) I saw my poor little snake trying to climb up to get back into her enclosure. 1.5 feet from my bed! I quickly got up and helped her into her tank, where she could access heat and water (we also did end up taking her to a reptile vet to get her coughing/sneezing treated) however, I immediately realized that for the past week she may have been cruising around my room at night, maybe even finding warmth in my bed! I like my snake, but that thought very much creeped me out.
