Shortly after takeoff at Portland OR, the captain got on the microphone: “folks, we just got word that our landing slot in Chicago has been delayed 15 minutes, so when we get there we’d be circling in a holding pattern for a while. So I think we’ll just stop by Mt St Helens and do our holding pattern there instead.”
This was just a few weeks after the volcano erupted, it was still steaming. We circled it at 9000 feet, once in both directions so everybody got a good look, then back on course, arriving right on time for a straight-in approach.
