What does Julian Lennon think about Hey Jude?

Julian Lennon said he grew up knowing the story behind “Hey Jude” but it wasn’t until 1987 that he heard the facts of the composition first-hand from Paul McCartney when he bumped into him while staying at the same hotel in New York.

Paul was the closest Beatle to Julian when he was a kid. Maybe he was closer to him than to his dad, John. “I remember rolling about on the floor, wrestling with Paul”, he recalled.

Julian said he finds it hard to get away from the song, “Hey Jude”.

He’ll be in a restaurant when he’ll hear it played or it’ll come on the car radio.

“It surprises me when I hear it”, he says. “It’s strange to think someone has written a song about you. It still touches me.”

Julian bought the recording notes of “Hey Jude” at an auction in 1996 for £25,000.

In 2002, a sale of the original handwritten lyrics were announced by Christie’s of London, with an estimated price of £80,000, but McCartney took out a court order to prevent the auction, saying the papers had disappeared from his London home.

Surely if that auction had gone on as scheduled, Julian would have been there to bid, since he was using his inheritance money, which was actually a very small percentage of the Lennon’s estate controlled by Yoko, in buying back Beatles memorabilia, most especially that of his dad.
