Today, I met an angel.
You came into the Denny’s where I work in Utah. When you walked in, you asked me something I found very strange at first:
“Can I have a waitress who is a single mother?”
I didn’t understand why you asked, but I seated you in Crystal’s section.
You sat there for nearly two hours, quietly watching people come and go. During that time, seven different families came in, ordered their meals, and ate while you were there. When it came time to pay, you paid every single one of their bills—over $1,000 total—for people you didn’t even know.
Curious, I finally asked you, “Why did you do that?”
You simply replied,
“Family is everything. I’ve lost all of mine.”
When you said those words, I looked into your eyes and saw so much pain that I immediately felt tears well up. That’s why I walked away so quickly. As soon as I got to the back, I completely broke down and cried. Your eyes carried a sadness I will never forget.
What you didn’t know is this: the waitress you specifically asked for, Crystal, has been living in a shelter with her young son. She’s been working hard, saving every dollar she could, hoping to afford a place of her own.
Your bill came to just $21.34.
You left Crystal a $1,500 tip.
Because of you, she will be able to move into her own place next week. Because of you, seven families were able to enjoy a meal without worrying about the cost. Crystal later told me that the night before, she had prayed for a miracle—and she truly believes God sent you.
You left quietly before any of us could properly thank you.
I hope somehow you read this, because you are an incredible human being. You touched every heart in this restaurant. To us, you weren’t just a customer—you were an angel.
Thank you.
