This afternoon, I was waiting for a client in Bantry Bay when I saw a guy throwing two big bags of trash into a bin. About 15 minutes later, he returned with two more bags and threw them in too. When I came back 45 minutes later, I saw him filling two more bags and decided to talk to him. He told me he felt “embarrassed about the pollution” and wanted the beaches to look nice for tourists and the ocean. He cleans the beaches every day by himself because he wants to “make the place nice.” With pride, he showed me his temporary ID to share his name. I ended up buying him lunch and felt proud of people like him in our beautiful country. What a legend, Siyabulela Dan Magobiyane! City of Cape Town, you should definitely give this man a job!
Update: Magobiyane was homeless and jobless when Jay Margolis shared this on Facebook. He’s now been offered a job with a waste management service and has found affordable housing.
