The Secret of Survival

Angel, a Jewish man who later became known as the owner of the most famous bakery in Germany, often shared this story of his youth — a story that revealed the secret of his survival.

He would begin by saying:

“Do you know why I am alive today?”

Then he would tell this story.

When Angel was just a teenager, the Nazis began rounding up Jews and sending them to concentration camps. One freezing winter night, he and hundreds of others were forced into a train bound for Auschwitz. The train cars were packed tightly — no food, no water, no blankets, no beds. The cold metal walls were like ice, and the winter wind cut through every crack.

For days, the train didn’t move. Snow kept falling, and the temperature dropped lower and lower. Inside the train, people trembled uncontrollably, their faces pale and lips blue. It felt as if the blood in their veins had turned to ice.

Among the prisoners was an elderly man from Angel’s town, a man everyone respected and loved. Angel noticed that the old man was shaking violently and looked like he was slipping away. His breathing was weak, and his body was turning stiff from the cold.

Without thinking of himself, young Angel wrapped his arms around the old man. He rubbed his hands, his arms, his legs — anything to bring back warmth. He massaged his face, kept whispering to him, “Hold on, please, don’t fall asleep. Stay alive!”

The night was endless. Angel was freezing too — his fingers were numb, his own body shaking — but he didn’t stop. He kept moving, rubbing, holding, and breathing warmth into the old man’s frail body.

Finally, after what felt like forever, dawn broke. The weak light of morning crept into the train car. Angel looked around — and his heart sank. Every single person in that car was frozen to death. Except for two.

The old man — and Angel himself.

Years later, when Angel told this story, he would smile gently and say:

“Do you know why we both survived? The old man survived because I kept him warm. And I survived because I kept him alive.”

Then he would add:

“Here is the secret of survival — the secret of life itself: When you warm the hearts of others, you warm your own. When you support, encourage, and care for others, you find strength within yourself. In helping others live, you keep your own soul alive.”
