In an interview, Mel Brooks was once asked, “Was there a secret to your marriage?”
Mel smiled and replied, “I don’t know if there was a secret. I’m not sure what you’d call a secret. But from the first moment I saw her, I fell in love—and it never stopped.”
On the surface, Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft appeared completely different.
Anne was tall, elegant, and widely admired for her beauty and poise. Mel often joked that he was short, loud, and not exactly handsome. Their personalities were different too—Anne was calm and refined, while Mel was energetic, silly, and constantly cracking jokes.
When Mel told his Jewish mother that he was marrying an Italian woman, she responded with her typical dramatic humor:
“Bring her over! I’ll be in the kitchen—with my head in the oven.”
Despite the cultural differences and their contrasting personalities, Mel and Anne formed one of Hollywood’s strongest and most loving marriages. They supported each other’s careers completely. Anne encouraged Mel to direct The Producers, which later became a classic. Mel, in turn, admired Anne’s talent deeply and considered her his greatest inspiration.
Like any couple, they sometimes argued. But they always found their way back to one another. Mel once said that even their disagreements ended in laughter. They shared a deep understanding, a shared sense of humor, and a sincere respect for each other.
Their marriage lasted 41 years—one of the longest and happiest unions in the entertainment industry. Sadly, their time together came to an end in 2005 when Anne Bancroft passed away from uterine cancer at the age of 73.
Even after her death, Mel continued to speak about her with profound love. He often said that meeting Anne was the luckiest moment of his life, and that their bond never truly ended.
