Janina Simmons has become a symbol of strength, perseverance, and courage within the U.S. Army. In 2019, she made history when she became the first Black woman to graduate from the Army’s Ranger School, a program known around the world for its extreme difficulty. Ranger School pushes soldiers to their physical and mental limits—long days, almost no sleep, heavy loads, and nonstop challenges. Many who attempt it don’t make it to the end. But Janina refused to quit. She pushed through every obstacle placed in her path and earned her Ranger Tab with pride.
But the battles she faced in uniform weren’t her only ones.
In 2023, Janina received devastating news: she had been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, and doctors told her the disease had spread throughout her body. For many people, this would have signaled the end of their military careers and the beginning of a difficult personal journey. But Janina once again chose to fight. She approached cancer with the same determination she had shown at Ranger School—never backing down, never giving in.
Her resilience led her to another historic milestone. On June 8, 2025, Janina Simmons became the first woman in the U.S. Army to be promoted to Sergeant Major while also wearing the Ranger Tab. This achievement represents not only her personal determination but also a powerful moment of progress and inspiration for soldiers everywhere.
Despite her extraordinary accomplishments, Janina does not see herself as extraordinary. She describes herself humbly, saying she grew up thinking she was “an ordinary Joe.” But her journey taught her something different. As she once explained:
“That was the first time I realized, if you do a little extra and set a goal, you can achieve greatness. I just put the extra into ordinary Joe, and became extraordinary.”
Her story is a reminder that greatness is within reach for anyone willing to push harder, endure more, and believe in their own potential.
