Nathaniel Bunn was driving in Pittsburgh with his son and father when they saw a terrible car crash happen right in front of them. A car flipped over and landed upside down on its roof.
Without thinking twice, Bunn jumped out of his car and ran toward the accident. Some people were already around the overturned car, trying to open the doors—but they were stuck. The woman inside couldn’t get out.
Bunn tried to help open the door, but it wouldn’t budge. So instead, he sat down beside the car and reached inside to hold the woman’s hand.
“I just sat down and told her to hold my hand,” he later told a reporter. “She squeezed it—she just needed comfort.”
The woman didn’t say anything, but she held on tightly. Bunn kept talking to her softly, telling her that help was coming and that everything would be okay.
While he was sitting there, he noticed that many people around were filming the crash with their phones instead of trying to help. That made him feel sad. “It just showed how the world is changing,” he said.
Bunn stayed with the woman until the paramedics arrived and carefully got her out of the car. Afterward, he called the hospital to check on her. They told him that nobody from the crash was in critical condition—which made him feel relieved. He never even learned her name.
When asked about that day, Bunn said he just hopes she’s recovering and that people learn from what happened.
“If you ever see someone who needs help,” he said, “try to help them. Don’t just think about yourself.”
