Officer Ralph Mondesir of the Gwinnett County Police Department in Georgia was sitting in his patrol car one afternoon, finishing some paperwork, when a person suddenly ran up to him in a panic. They told him that an 18-month-old baby had stopped breathing and needed help immediately.
Without wasting a second, Officer Mondesir jumped out of his car and rushed to the child. He gently picked the baby up and began performing CPR. Shortly afterward, an off-duty nurse arrived and joined him. While the nurse provided rescue breaths, Mondesir continued chest compressions.
For seven long and stressful minutes, the two worked together, fighting to save the child’s life. At first, there was no response—the baby was still and not breathing. But then, slowly, a pulse appeared. Moments later, the baby began breathing again.
Paramedics arrived soon after and quickly transported the child to the hospital. Doctors later confirmed that the baby survived because of the fast, skilled actions of Officer Mondesir and the nurse.
Speaking about the incident, Mondesir said, “I got a little emotional towards the end. I just did what I was trained to do, and I will always keep doing it no matter what.”
Officer Mondesir’s quick thinking and bravery truly make him a hero.
