Joanna the Imprisoned: The True Story Behind ‘Joanna the Mad

0

Joanna of Castile, also called Joanna the Mad, was born on November 6, 1479 to Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. She was highly educated—she could speak Latin, write poetry, and studied philosophy, law, and music. Originally, she wasn’t expected to rule, but the deaths of her older siblings made her heir to the Castilian throne.

In 1496, Joanna married Philip the Handsome, a politically important match. Philip was charming in reputation but unfaithful in reality, often pursuing other women at court. Joanna was deeply hurt by his betrayals, and her emotional reactions—anger, sadness, even confrontation—led people to call her “crazy.”

When her mother, Isabella, died in 1504, Joanna became Queen of Castile in name. But in practice, her father Ferdinand and her husband Philip controlled the government. Joanna’s authority was constantly undermined.

In 1506, Philip died suddenly. Joanna was devastated. She reportedly kept his body near her, refusing to part with it, which people used as “proof” that she was mad. Her father, fearing she might remarry or regain political power, confined her in Tordesillas, taking away her ability to rule.

Even after her father’s death, her son Charles (later Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor) forced her to give up her power. Joanna remained locked away for the rest of her life, living in isolation but still recognized as queen in name.

Joanna died on April 12, 1555, at the age of 75. Historians now believe she wasn’t truly “mad”—she was a smart, capable woman whose emotions and assertiveness were labeled as insanity because the men around her wanted power.

Her story is a tragic reminder of how women’s intelligence and strength were often punished, and how history sometimes misrepresents their lives.
