Someone of the OR staff shaves her pubic hair, because that is the site where the surgery will happen.
Usually a nurse does this, but every so often a doctor also does — my girlfriend personally shaves all her patients down there, male or female — and then the area will be cleaned, disinfected and properly prepared for the surgical procedure. (Today, it’s the doctor’s turn.)
While her legs are maneuvered into a surgical stirrup, the anesthesiologist makes a lame joke about Miss Anderson’s hypertrophic labia — he does not want to mock her body, but actually tries the ease the tension and create a relaxing mood. In the case of Mr. Cob, another joke was made early this morning when the urologist could not find his micro penis which apparently was hiding underneath a flap of wrinkled skin.
Every member of the OR staff is a professional, and they all have seen thousands of genitals professionally pass by. You might find such jokes insulting if you would be awake, but you are asleep anyhow, and more than anything else you want the surgeons to be relaxed before they take you on.
Every single one of these patients has a problem which needs to be solved, jokes aside.
Some genitals are stinky and diseased, others are disproportional or discolored. Some of them are covered by thick layers of smegma, and still others are hiding as if they have been in hibernation for quite a while.
On some more dramatic occasions, a penis and scrotum have to be removed, but even then the surgeons and nurses try to have a casual conversation — knowing all too well this very emasculation will probably save his life, but also destroy most of its passion. And still the anesthesiologist tells one of his standard (though more respectful) jokes.
And even though it might still sound hurtful, the OR people all smile for the very same reason. The operation is a great success
