Her Final Words: ‘I Love You More Than Anything’ — The Story of Lauren Grandcolas

lauren Grandcolas left one final voicemail for her husband after Flight 93 was hijacked on September 11. She was three months pregnant at the time.

On September 11, 2001, 38-year-old Lauren Grandcolas, who worked in advertising sales for Good Housekeeping magazine, was flying home to San Rafael, California. She had traveled to New Jersey to attend her grandmother’s funeral.

She got to Newark Liberty International Airport earlier than planned and decided to switch to an earlier flight back to San Francisco, leaving at 8 a.m. She called her husband to let him know about the change, but because of the time difference, he was still asleep.

Lauren boarded United Flight 93 and sat in row 11. After the plane was hijacked, she managed to make a calm and loving call from the cabin. Her voice was recorded on their home answering machine. In it, she said, “We’re having a little problem on the plane. I’m totally fine. I love you more than anything—just know that.”

During the hijacking, a total of 37 calls were made from Flight 93 between 9:28 a.m. and the crash at 10:03 a.m. Most were made using seatback Airfones, while two came from personal cell phones.

We will never forget the brave passengers and crew who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.
