He already had a name. In fact, he had lived with the same family for fourteen years since he was a kitten. When his owners moved to a new apartment, they decided to make Sonny an outdoor cat, even though he had always spent most of his time indoors. He lived on the stairs and porch of the building, and his owners would throw away any leftover food if they remembered it. I saw him there while walking my dog and learned his story, so I started taking him a can of food every morning and night. He was missing part of one ear due to an unfortunate encounter with a dog a few years ago. He had to fight stray cats and run from stray dogs in the neighborhood, so he was always nervous when we approached him.
In May, I learned that the owners had moved and abandoned the place. He was still sitting there, waiting for them to return, but they never did. Even though I had been feeding him for a few months now, it had never occurred to me to take him with me. I’d never had a cat before and didn’t even know how to take care of one. I also wasn’t sure my 10-year-old dog would accept him. Still, I went to the pet store and bought all the cat supplies I’d need, put him in his carrier, and brought him home. It’s been over four months, and he’s a happy, healthy old man. He spends his days hunting and napping in the yard, and his evenings relaxing in the den, sharing snacks with us, and enjoying his new life. The dog accepted him, as long as he stayed away from its treats! I’m so happy he came to live with us and will never understand how anyone could have abandoned him. He’s a welcome addition to our family
