My 11-year-old son was admitted to the hospital on June 27 to begin chemotherapy and radiation in preparation for his bone marrow transplant. Initially, my oldest daughter was supposed to be his donor, but at the very last moment, the doctors determined that I would be the better match—so I became his donor instead.
My boy has shown incredible bravery and strength through every step of this journey. And today, after everything he has been through, I finally get to bring him home. 💕 He’s so excited to hug his sisters again and cuddle with his beloved kitties.
He is one of only seven people in the entire world to be diagnosed with a newly discovered and extremely rare genetic mutation. When the doctors first told us, they explained that out of the six other known cases, two patients had already passed away and one was in the ICU and not doing well. Because of this, the medical team acted quickly and scheduled his transplant to give him the best possible chance of survival.
Today marks day +31 from his “rebirth day”—the day he received his transplant—and he is improving a little more every single day. We know that the journey ahead is still long and challenging, but I am endlessly grateful to the incredible hospital staff who have worked tirelessly to save my sweet boy’s life. 💕
