In 2015, school principal Jason Smith had no idea that a routine disciplinary matter would change his life forever. That day, a 12-year-old girl named Raven sat quietly outside his office, waiting to be picked up after being suspended from the sixth grade.
“She looked like such a sweet, innocent child, sitting there feeling down,” Jason recalled. “I asked her what had happened, and she told me she threw a cup of yogurt at lunch and got suspended. She was just waiting to be picked up.”
It might have seemed like a simple case of a student acting out—but something about Raven tugged at Jason’s heart. Curious, he gently asked her a question:
“Would you ever throw food in a restaurant?”
Raven shook her head and told him she’d never actually been to one. That answer stopped him cold. When he asked more about her life, she explained that she didn’t really have a family. She had spent most of her life moving between group homes and foster care placements, never staying long enough to call any place “home.”
Jason could see the sadness in her eyes. “She needed someone to help her,” he later said. “She just needed something good to happen to her for once.”
At home, Jason shared the encounter with his wife, Marybeth. The couple had been struggling with infertility for years, and the story of the little girl at school moved them deeply. They decided to reach out and see if they could be a part of her life.
After navigating the necessary steps with child services, the Smiths welcomed Raven into their family—not just as a student in Jason’s school, but as their daughter.
From that day on, Raven’s life began to change. She finally had a place where she belonged, parents who loved her, and a support system that believed in her future. Jason and Marybeth encouraged her to dream big, study hard, and build a life far beyond the hardships of her early years.
Today, Raven is thriving. She’s a student at the University of Kentucky, studying social work—hoping to help children who, like her younger self, are navigating the foster care system in search of love and stability.
Reflecting on their journey, Jason says he’s just grateful that fate brought them together that day.
“Sometimes life puts you exactly where you need to be,” he said. “That day, I thought I was helping a student. But really, she changed our lives, too.”
