This is my 14-year-old daughter. On our way home, she suddenly noticed a young boy—about elementary school age—sitting alone under a tree in a shopping center. Without hesitation, she told me, “It’s too hot, Mom. Please stop the car!”
As soon as I pulled over, she got out and gently asked the boy where his parents were. He quietly replied, “I don’t know.”
She then asked if he could call anyone, and he said he only had his father’s number. She handed him her phone and stepped a little distance away so he wouldn’t feel scared or pressured. After he spoke with his dad, she calmly advised him to wait in front of the Rite Aid, where it was safer—away from the street—so that no strangers could approach him, and he could run into the store if he felt unsafe.
Then she turned to me and said,
“Mom, we should wait here until his dad comes. If it takes too long, I might need to get him some water.”
In that moment, my heart was full. This simple act of kindness reminded me why I will never allow anyone to make me question myself as a mother. I am raising children who are compassionate, thoughtful, protective, and ready to make a difference in the world.
