Today at Walmart, an elderly man walked up to me and asked, “Does your phone take pictures?” I told him, “Yes, it does,” even though I wasn’t sure why he was asking. Then he said, “Let me see your phone.” I handed it to him, still confused, and he said, “Now let me take a picture of this moment.”
I was surprised, because I don’t really like taking pictures of myself. My daughter, Aubrey, was also being shy and didn’t want to be in a picture. Still, I agreed, thinking maybe it would be nice. The man took a picture of me and my daughter right there at Walmart, even though she wasn’t smiling. When he handed my phone back, I thanked him and said, “Nobody ever takes pictures of me with my kids.”
He smiled gently and said, “I knew that, because you’re the mom.” Then he added, “Time goes by so fast. These are the best moments of your life.”
He told me he was 85 years old and that he would give anything to have more moments like those—simple shopping trips with his own kids. I didn’t know what to say. That stranger’s kindness meant so much to me. It’s rare for moms to get pictures with their children because we’re usually the ones taking them.
His small, thoughtful act touched my heart and reminded me to cherish every moment. Truly, what a beautiful soul he has.
