Earlier today, an elderly woman came into my gas station. She walked slowly with a cane and handed me $3 in loose change to put on her gas pump. As she did, a police officer standing behind her overheard the amount and noticed how much she was struggling to move around.
The officer immediately went outside with her and kindly told her to sit in her car while he pumped the gas for her. While they talked, he learned a little about her situation — she had recently lost her husband, was living on a very tight budget, and was having a hard time keeping up with her bills. The $3 worth of gas she could afford wasn’t going to take her very far.
Seeing how much she was struggling, the officer came back inside and, without hesitation, paid another $20 from his own pocket to fill up her tank. Then he went back outside, finished pumping the gas, and chatted with her for a few more minutes to make sure she was okay. The woman was deeply touched and grateful — that small act of kindness made a big difference for her that day.
In a world where we often hear negative stories about police officers, it’s important to remember there are so many good ones out there doing kind and selfless things every single day — acts that often go unnoticed.
Police officers leave their families every day to protect ours. They run toward danger when others run away. They deserve our respect, appreciation, and thanks for their service and sacrifices.
To all the men and women in blue — thank you for everything you do.
