A Family of Four

Today was one of the most special days of our lives.
We woke up with excitement, hearts full of hope, because today… we were going to meet our new child.

When we arrived at the adoption center, we were greeted by the kind volunteers who had been taking care of the children. We looked around, and then — there she was. The moment our eyes met, it felt like everything stopped. She was smiling shyly, holding a little stuffed toy close to her chest.

But what touched us most was seeing how she kept glancing back at a small boy who stood beside her. The two were holding hands, almost as if they couldn’t be apart. We asked one of the volunteers about him, and they said softly,

“That’s her brother, Mavrouli. He’s very close to her. They’ve been together since birth.”

We watched as Mavrouli gently wiped her tears when she got emotional, whispering something to make her laugh again. You could tell — their bond was unbreakable.

Then the volunteer added quietly,

“Mavrouli is a sweet boy, but… no one has come forward to adopt him. Many families prefer the younger or fairer kids. He’s been left behind because he’s black.”

For a moment, we were silent. My heart ached hearing that.
How could anyone look at this loving child and not see how special he was?

I turned to my partner and saw the same thought in their eyes. Without hesitation, I looked back at the man and said,

“Then we want to adopt both of them. Together.”

The volunteers froze for a second — then their faces lit up with the warmest smiles. The children’s eyes widened in disbelief. The little girl ran into my arms, and Mavrouli hesitated for a moment before I opened my arms wider. He ran into the hug too — and that’s when I knew: this was meant to be.

Today, we didn’t just adopt a daughter.
We adopted her brother too.
Today, we became a family of four.

As we drove home, they both fell asleep in the back seat, holding each other’s hands. I looked at them in the mirror and whispered,

“Welcome home, my loves.”

I hope one day, everyone in this world gets to feel this kind of happiness — the kind that comes from love, kindness, and choosing family not by blood, but by heart. ❤️
