At 23 weeks and 4 days, a private gynecologist told us that because of an incompetent cervix (already 2cm dilated), baby Leon had less than a 30% chance of survival. The doctor referred us to a public hospital for a cerclage and did not continue to manage our case, even though we had already paid for a private package with him.
At the public hospital, we were shocked when the nurses asked if we wanted to resuscitate the baby if he was born before 24 weeks — the age considered viable. We decided to go ahead with resuscitation, even knowing that a baby born so early might face several medical challenges.
I was admitted to the hospital and thankfully managed to keep the pregnancy going through a month-long stay. At 28 weeks, I was sent home to continue resting.
Baby Leon was born prematurely at 32 weeks and 1 day, weighing 1.7kg. He spent one week in the NICU and another three weeks in the special care nursery.
Today, Leon is a healthy 5-year-old, in the top 90th percentile for height. We are so proud of our little fighter.
