Working in retail makes you question humanity on a daily basis. None more so than working in a supermarket.
I’m not sure what it is about, airports, carparks and supermarkets, but people seem to lose all common sense and respect.
At the supermarket I worked at we did not pack the shopping into bags. However, I often did for the elderly or people with disabilities (because it’s easy and I’m happy to help them!).
One day I was scanning this young woman’s groceries;
Me: “Sweet, if that’s everything it’s $104, is that cash or card today?”.
Her: “Card! But I’m not paying until you pack the groceries for me!”.
No please. No thanks. Nothing! I was annoyed to say the least.
“We don’t typically pack the groceries here” I said.
“Well I just saw you do it for the lady before me so I deserve it too!” she remarked.
For context the person before was a woman, who I’m guessing was in her late 80’s, who was obviously quite frail. It would be hard for her to pack them, I wouldn’t want her to either – I was more than happy to help her! This woman however, was in her 30s, rude, entitled and selfish!
I bit my tongue and replied;
“Okay, no worries, I’ll pack that for you now”.
After two minutes the groceries were all packed into bags and I put them into her trolley.
“Excuse me!” She yells, “That’s not how I like them packed, redo it!”.
Is this b*tch forking serious I thought to myself?!?!?
There was absolutely no way I was going to repack her groceries. Not even if it cost me my job. So I leant over the counter and whispered to her.
“I suggest you push that trolley to your car before a random dent somehow magically appears on that Range Rover of yours”.
She got the message and stormed off.
(Side note, I also was not kidding, that’s a perk of knowing where all the blindspots are on the carpark cameras…)
