What Beatles trivia question will stump the most fans?
Haha, that’s easy.
Ask them who was offered the drummer’s job after Pete Best was unceremoniously sacked?
Most fans will say Richard Starkey, aka Ringo Starr, who occasionally sat in with the Beatles in Hamburg, Germany when he wasn’t playing with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.
But that’s incorrect!
The first person offered Best’s job was Johnny Hutchinson by Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Known as Johnny Hutch, Hutchinson played drums for a group called The Big Three, who Epstein also managed and had gotten a recording contract for with Decca Records.
Hutchinson turned Epstein down. He flat out said he didn’t like the sound of The Beatles and that he preferred staying with his own band!
Interestingly, Hutchinson had played drums a couple of times with the Silver Beatles, predecessor of The Beatles and he also played at least one gig for The Beatles after Best was fired before Ringo officially joined the band.
Till the day he died at the age of 79, Hutchinson said he never regretted his decision to stay with The Big Three.
