Why didn’t Johnny Carson like Ed McMahon all that much?

Original question: “Why didn’t Johnny Carson like Ed McMahon all that much?” Because they had completely different personalities. Ed was gregarious, outgoing, a true extrovert. Johnny was reclusive, an introvert, and had a nasty disposition.

While they got along fine on set, because their personalities complimented each other. Offset they seldom got together.

Johnny wasn’t friendly with a lot of people and when drinking went from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde in a flash. Multiple reports verify this.

It’s interesting that Johnny even told his son he hated Ed McMahon. But then, Johnny also hated his son. He was cruel to his wives and hated his mother.

What you saw on set was not the real Johnny Carson. The real Johnny Carson was a very unhappy soul, but before the cameras, he came to life.

Years ago I once heard someone say that if the cameras could follow Johnny Carson everywhere during his life, he would be happy. But, alas, they only focused on him about four or five hours a week. The rest of the time Johnny was left in his dispirited self imposed loneliness and demons that envied, hated, and found fault with everyone. He was, in three words, a miserable man.
