A gruesome but extraordinary discovery: in 1998, a recovery team from St Petersburg, Russia discovered the wreckage of a Soviet fighter plane on the moors outside the city. The plane had been shot down in 1943 and the pilot was found strapped into his seat in a state of near-perfect preservation.
The impact had caused him facial trauma and lower limbs, but otherwise he was as he was on the day he took off on his final flight. He was carrying a pistol and several identification items.
