I took care of a 12-year-old girl WHO WAS SHOT in the Emergency Room.
She was with her friend another 12-year-old girl who was the daughter of the lady who “shot” her.. ** It was a bizarre accidental shooting””.
The woman came to the ER to get a doctor to prescribed her some medicines she routinely took but were prescribed by a doctor in her home state. They were on vacation. While in the Emergency Suite waiting to see the doctor, she suddenly sat her oversized purse with handles down on the tile flooring.
“BANG: was the loud retort from the room. Several nurses and staff rushed in to see what happened, without thinking of personal danger. ( I personally, thought it was quite brave of them, myself).
When the woman slammed the purse down on the floor, the concussion was enough to cause the rimfire derringer’s hammer of the derringer in her purse to fire the bullet right through the purse and they form a “through & though” shot very cleanly through the young girls right anterior upper thigh muscle.
It was the cleanest GSW (Gun Shot Wound, in ER talk) I ever saw in the ER. The young girl was surprisingly calm. She was in emotional shock of the reality of the situation or did not realize its possible fatal outcome,
Nurses informally call this: “delayed grieving ‘.
She was admitted for a 23 hr. observation, after a sterile cleaning and irrigation of the wound, which again had surprisingly minimal bleed loss after about 10 or 15 minutes. The bullet was a 22 caliber short in a cheap “Saturday-night” derringer.
Side Note: I bet that was one tough telephone call to make ! Which call ?
The one you make to the mother of the child who was placed in your care & protection when she was allowed to left HER MOTHER to go on vacation with her friend. That one. “Hello, I just called to say I shot your daughter, one”.
