Has anyone ever been completely unaware of their medical condition until they received a checkup from a doctor? Have you or anyone you know personally experienced this?

Yes and I have told this story before on Quora.

I once went to the doctor for what I thought were just age spots or freckles. I had a bunch of them on my feet and hands but due to having no insurance didn’t want to go to a doctor’s office. Well after I started a new job and had been there long enough to have benefits start they were all over my hands, feet, shoulders, back and starting to show on my chest and abdomen and I noticed my heart would occasionally start racing. Below is a photo of these marks, petechia, on my feet. Notice it looks very much like a rash however you don’t feel anything from them there’s no itching or burning.

The doctor did a blood test and told me he’d rush the results through and contact me that day. When he did he asked me where I was and I told him work and he said I needed to go to the ER right now and just give them my name. I did and they told me my blood had virtually no platelets at all. They were just gone. If I was cut the cut would likely not clot.

They immediately took me in and ran another blood test and a urine sample and had me strip and put on a gown. Then they told me to get on a bed and lay there. After they cleared a room they admitted me and ran a series of tests. They wanted to admit me to the ICU, but no room was available as COVID was still going on.

I was asked to remove the gown and had a full body skin exam from head to toe. I had my urine and stools checked for blood and my orifices checked for signs of bleeding. I had a full body MRI and brain scan, etc. They then hooked me up to a heart monitor and determined after all the tests that I had severe ITP with AFIB. They tried several treatments to get my platelets back to normal and after two weeks found that injecting hemoglobin worked. I have not had a relapse since but the cause was determined to be a complication of COVID which I contracted shortly before gallbladder removal.

The COVID combined with the later surgery caused my immune system to “totally freak”.

This was in 2021 I have not had a relapse since though I still suffer AFib on occasion.

Edit – OK, so apparently this post kind of blew up if anybody has any questions about the condition or anything about my hospital visit or treatment feel free to ask below.
