This is Mama, a cat who used to live with a family just up the street. Over the years, she had many litters of kittens, but the conditions she and her babies lived in were very hard. Mama often looked weak and struggled to keep her kittens alive. I would see her outside my kitchen window, looking for food. After I fed her, she would disappear, only to come back year after year.
When the neighbors moved away, Mama stayed behind. I thought she stayed to have another litter. In April, I knew she had babies, but I didn’t know where they were hidden.
In early May, we lost our 16-year-old dog to cancer, and it broke our hearts. But on Thursday, when we came home from work, Mama brought her three kittens into our garage. One kitten was adopted by a friend, and we made sure Mama and her remaining two kittens were spayed and neutered.
I’m so thankful that Mama stayed behind. Her kittens are now full of energy, and I’m grateful for the comfort Mama brought us during our grief.
