Here’s a great example of “someone having the last laugh”:
I was flying from New York to India, and the plane was pretty full. I was sitting next to an elderly Indian woman. As I was getting comfortable, a couple came to our row of three seats and told the woman she was sitting in their seat. The woman, traveling alone, seemed to struggle with English, so I checked her boarding pass and asked the couple to wait while I called a flight attendant.
The wife started being rude, saying things like, “We’re Americans, so we should get priority,” and “Foreigners always book last minute, and this is why there’s confusion.”
I stood up and offered the woman my seat, but she insisted on having “her seat” which the elderly lady was sitting in. Thankfully, a flight attendant came soon after, and I explained the situation. The couple kept ranting, so the attendant asked me to take our bags and move the elderly lady.
As we walked away, the wife was still complaining about the inconvenience. Honestly, I didn’t mind changing seats—it wasn’t a big deal.
We walked through two sections of economy seating, and ended up in business class! I told the flight attendant that it was fine for me to return to my original seat in economy, but she said, “You can stay here with the lady. I’m sure she doesn’t want to be alone.”
I went back to grab my reading glasses from my original seat, and saw the wife arguing with the attendant. She realized what had happened and was upset to see we were moved to business class instead of them.
I hope their flight was still enjoyable.
As the plane was about to land, the elderly lady, sitting in business class, grabbed my hand and said, “Thank you.” That moment was the highlight of my trip.
