I had a rough travel day on Sunday. My partner and I got separated in Chicago because of bad weather, and everything had been stressful from the moment we landed. On top of that, I was traveling alone with my 8-month-old baby. It was only his second flight ever, and to my relief, he was handling it surprisingly well—at least at first.
Once we settled into our seats, he suddenly became fascinated with the woman sitting by the window. He kept leaning and crawling toward her, determined to make a new friend. She smiled warmly, introduced herself, and after a moment said, “Oh, just give him to me!”
Exhausted and overwhelmed from the long day of delays and layovers, I decided to trust her kindness and handed him over. Not even a minute later, my son rested his head on her chest and fell fast asleep. She laughed and joked, “Power of the boobies!”
Then she looked at me and said gently, “If you need a quick nap, I can hold him while he sleeps.” And that small offer—so simple, so unexpected—felt like a lifeline. I took her up on it and allowed myself to rest for the first time that day.
In the middle of a chaotic, exhausting travel experience, this kind stranger brought me a moment of peace and hope. She reminded me that even on the hardest days, there are still good, generous people in the world.
