In 1992, 18-year-old John Thompson was home alone when a tractor accident cut off both his arms. Losing blood fast, he somehow managed to grab a pencil with his mouth and call 911. While waiting for help, John sat in the bathtub — not to save himself, but to keep from getting blood on the carpet. Paramedics reached him just in time, and doctors spent 13 hours in surgery to attach his arms again. Against all odds, he lived — a story still known as one of the strongest examples of human courage and will to survive.
