In an interview, Mel Brooks was asked, “Was there a secret to your marriage?”
Mel replied, “I don’t know if there was a secret. I don’t know what you’d call a secret. I think we….from the first moment I saw her, I fell in love and it…..”
On the outside, Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft seemed very different. She was tall and beautiful, while Mel always joked that he was short and not very attractive.
When Mel told his Jewish mother he was marrying an Italian woman, she joked, “Bring her over! I’ll be in the kitchen—with my head in the oven.”
But despite their differences, Mel and Anne shared one of Hollywood’s longest and most loving marriages. They would argue sometimes, but they always found common ground and ended their disagreements with laughter.
Sadly, their 41 years together ended in 2005 when Anne passed away from uterine cancer at 73.
