When fourteen-year-old Ariana was admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for fifteen days due to severe digestive problems and significant weight loss, her family’s world changed overnight. What was supposed to be a normal routine quickly turned into a stressful cycle of hospital visits, long drives, and constant worry.
For her mother, Joy—a single parent raising three children, one of whom has cystic fibrosis and another with special needs—life became overwhelming. Every day was a struggle to balance work, the needs of her children at home, and the emotional toll of having Ariana in the hospital. The days blended together in a haze of rushing between home and the hospital, managing medications, meeting with doctors, and trying to reassure her other kids, who were confused and anxious about their sister’s absence.
Joy explained, “As a single mom of three, one with CF and one with special needs, my time is always split to care for all my kids and work enough to get by. Recently, my daughter Ariana, who has CF, was in the hospital for 15 days because of digestive problems and weight loss.”
The long hospital stay was frightening for Ariana and exhausting for Joy, but it also showed the family’s incredible strength. Through sleepless nights, medical challenges, and the constant pressure of juggling responsibilities, Joy did everything she could to keep her family steady. Despite the difficulties, she remained determined to support her children and help Ariana recover.
