On the night of May 19

0

On the night of May 19, 1983, 28-year-old Diane Downs drove her three children along a quiet road near Springfield, Oregon. She stopped the car on the side of the road and shot each of them with her .22-caliber gun — first seven-year-old Cheryl, then three-year-old Danny, and finally eight-year-old Christie.
Afterward, Diane shot herself in the arm to make it look like she was also attacked. She then drove very slowly — less than 10 miles an hour — to the hospital, letting her children suffer before taking them inside. When she finally arrived, she told a false story about a man who had tried to carjack and shoot them, claiming she had driven at high speed to get help.
Diane thought all three children were dead, but only Cheryl had been killed. Christie and Danny were badly hurt but survived. When Diane went to court for her terrible crimes, Christie was strong enough to testify against her own mother.
