When Ariana, just 14,

When Ariana, just 14 years old, was admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for 15 days due to severe digestive problems and significant weight loss, her family’s entire world turned upside down. For her mother, Joy—a single parent raising three children, including another child with special needs—the experience was overwhelming. Every day blurred into the next as she juggled hospital visits, long drives back and forth, and sleepless nights spent worrying not only about Ariana, but also about the two children waiting for her at home.

Joy explained the reality of her situation:
“As a single mom of three—one with cystic fibrosis and another with special needs—my time is always split between caring for all my kids and working just enough to get by. Recently, my daughter Ariana, who has CF, was hospitalized for 15 days because of digestive problems and weight loss.”

Those two weeks were some of the hardest Joy had ever faced. She tried to be strong for Ariana as doctors worked to stabilize her condition, all while making sure her other children felt safe and supported. Balancing medical decisions, financial pressure, and the emotional strain of having a sick child, Joy pushed through each day with determination and love.

Ariana’s stay in the hospital tested the whole family, but it also highlighted Joy’s resilience. Even in the midst of fear and uncertainty, she fought to keep her family together, hopeful for Ariana’s recovery and stronger days ahead.
