During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, actress Shelley Winters shared one of her most memorable audition stories. At the time, she was considered a bit older for the roles she was being offered. She was called in to audition for a project, and the producers instructed her to bring her headshot and resume.
When Shelley arrived at the audition, she was carrying a large Chanel bag. The producers, curious and perhaps a little skeptical, asked her if she had brought the photo and resume as requested. With absolute confidence and a mischievous smile, Shelley opened her bag.
Out came her first Academy Award, which she placed on the table. “Here’s my photo,” she said.
Then she reached back into her bag and pulled out her second Oscar, placing it right next to the first. “And here’s my f**king resume,” she added, perfectly punctuating the moment with her trademark wit.
The story is a perfect showcase of Shelley Winters’ boldness, humor, and unapologetic self-assurance—a reminder that sometimes confidence and a little dramatic flair speak louder than words.
