Ava Guidas, 14, is the middle child of seven from Panama City Beach, Florida. Her mother, Stacy, describes her as having an “old soul,” with red hair and freckles that make her stand out. Ava loves people and animals and was excited for a big year playing volleyball, basketball, and softball at Mosley High School.
But on July 17, Ava’s life changed in an instant. She was riding an ATV with two friends near a dry pond when she turned too sharply, causing her ATV to flip and land on her. The accident left Ava with a traumatic brain injury, a skull fracture, brain swelling, internal bleeding, eye socket injuries, and multiple broken bones. She underwent several surgeries and needed constant care and prayers.
Ava woke up in Pensacola Children’s Hospital, and after 34 days, she was moved to a rehabilitation hospital in Jacksonville. Despite the challenges, Ava’s spirit has shone through. One night, while sitting with her father, she said, “Dad, I hate that this happened to me, but if it brought our family closer to each other and to God, then I’m okay with it being me.”
Recently, Ava received the wonderful news that she will be going home to Panama City later this week. Doctors also discovered a brain aneurysm, but it is now under control. Her family knows the road ahead will be long, but they are grateful for her progress and resilience.
Ava would love to hear from people who want to encourage her.
