I was driving to the post office one afternoon when something caught my eye—a small table set up on the sidewalk in front of a house. There was a handwritten sign that said “FREE.” Curious, I drove past at first, but something made me turn the car around. I parked nearby and walked over to see what it was about.
As I approached, I saw a few people sitting beside the table. A young man smiled and asked kindly, “Would you like a meal?” That’s when I realized the table was covered with neatly packed, homemade meals. I was taken aback for a moment. I hadn’t expected that.
I smiled and said, “No, thank you,” but I couldn’t help asking what they were doing. The woman sitting behind the table looked up and explained, “Every Sunday, we prepare meals and give them out to anyone who needs one.”
Her words touched me deeply. There was such simple goodness in what they were doing—no fuss, no spotlight, just pure kindness. I felt a lump in my throat and had to take a breath to keep from getting emotional. I thanked them sincerely for their generosity and compassion. Wanting to contribute, I offered them some money, but the lady smiled gently and said, “No, thank you. We just want to help.”
As I walked back to my car, I couldn’t stop thinking about them—the warmth in their voices, the selflessness in their actions. I don’t even know what made me stop that day, but I’m so glad I did. Their small act of kindness reminded me that there is still so much good in the world, especially in times when we need it most.
