Early Life and Family
Sophia Loren was born Sofia Villani Scicolone on September 20, 1934, in Rome, Italy, and grew up in the seaside town of Pozzuoli, near Naples. Her childhood was marked by poverty and hardship.
Her mother, Romilda Villani, had once dreamed of being a film star herself. In 1932, Romilda entered (and won) a Greta Garbo lookalike contest — her resemblance to the Hollywood legend was uncanny. She was even offered an opportunity to travel to the United States to pursue a film career.
However, because she was only 17 years old, her mother refused to let her go to Hollywood. Not long after, Romilda met Riccardo Scicolone, a man of noble background. The two never married, but Romilda gave birth to Sophia — and later her sister, Maria. Sophia’s father refused to support the family, leaving Romilda to raise the children alone during the tough years of World War II.
A Skinny, Shy Child Becomes a Beauty
As a child, Sophia was thin, awkward, and often teased by her classmates. They called her nicknames like “Stecchetto” (The Stick) or “Toothpick”, because she was so lanky.
But everything changed when she turned 14 — her features matured, and she began to blossom into a stunning young woman. People in her town began to notice her beauty, and soon, Sophia’s life took a new direction.
From Beauty Contests to Stardom
At 15, she entered the Miss Italia beauty contest in 1950. Although she didn’t win, she did make it to the finals and won the title of “Miss Elegance.” That moment opened the door to modeling and small film roles.
Around this time, she met Carlo Ponti, a film producer who would become her lifelong partner. Ponti recognized her potential immediately and began helping her develop her acting career. He also encouraged her to change her name from Sofia Lazzaro (a stage name she briefly used) to Sophia Loren — the name that would soon become world famous.
Hollywood Stardom
By the mid-1950s, Sophia had become one of Italy’s most popular film stars. Her talent, sensuality, and earthy charm set her apart from other actresses. Soon, Hollywood took notice.
She starred opposite some of the biggest leading men of the era, including:
- Cary Grant (Houseboat, 1958)
- Clark Gable (It Started in Naples, 1960)
- Charlton Heston (El Cid, 1961)
- Marlon Brando (A Countess from Hong Kong, 1967)
Because Sophia was almost 5’9” (175 cm) tall — and often wore high heels and large hairstyles — some shorter male actors were self-conscious about appearing beside her. In heels, she could look over six feet tall, which was unusual for actresses in that era.
Historic Academy Award Win
In 1962, Sophia Loren made history by winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for Two Women (La Ciociara) — becoming the first actor ever to win an Oscar for a performance in a foreign-language film.
That film, directed by Vittorio De Sica, portrayed a mother’s struggle to protect her daughter during World War II. It was one of the most powerful performances ever given on screen and cemented Sophia’s status as a legend.
Love and Family
Sophia married Carlo Ponti in 1957 (though the marriage was initially annulled due to legal complications) and remarried him in 1966. They remained devoted to each other until Ponti’s death in 2007.
They had two sons:
- Carlo Ponti Jr., a conductor
- Edoardo Ponti, a film director, who married actress Sasha Alexander (NCIS, Rizzoli & Isles)
Interestingly, Sophia Loren is also the godmother of actress Drew Barrymore — a touching connection that ties two generations of Hollywood royalty together.
Later Life and Legacy
Sophia continued to act throughout the decades, appearing in both Italian and American films. Even as she aged, she retained her timeless elegance and sharp wit.
In 1999, the American Film Institute (AFI) included her on its list of the “100 Greatest Movie Stars of All Time.” After Sidney Poitier’s passing in January 2022, Sophia Loren became the only living actor left from that historic list.
Now in her 90s, Sophia Loren remains a symbol of Italian grace, beauty, and strength — a woman who rose from poverty to global stardom while staying deeply rooted in her family and heritage.
