The Miracle of the Woracek Twins

0

On the freezing morning of January 17, 1997, in Omaha, Nebraska, it was –9°F outside. Twin sisters Jennifer and Kourtney Woracek, only three years old, woke up early before anyone else. While their family was still asleep, the two little girls quietly left their home and wandered out into the snow.

When their father woke up, he noticed the front door was open and the lights were on. He ran outside, calling their names, but they were gone. Panicked, he called the police right away. Officers from the Omaha Police Department rushed to the scene to search for the missing twins.

The night was bitterly cold and dark. Snow was falling heavily, and it was hard to see or drive. Officers Troy Kister and Allen Wagner were searching near a steep hill when their patrol car got stuck in the snow. They got out to see how to free it, and at that exact moment, Officer Kister saw tiny footprints in the snow leading toward a narrow alley.

The officers followed the footprints carefully. Soon, they found two little shoes lying in the snow — a terrible sign in such freezing weather. Just a few steps further, they saw a heartbreaking sight:
Jennifer was lying face down in the snow, not moving. Her twin sister Kourtney was kneeling beside her, shivering and crying. When the officers reached them, Kourtney looked up and said softly, “Please help my sister.”

Officer Wagner picked up Jennifer — she was ice-cold and barely breathing. He wrapped her in his coat and rushed her to his police cruiser. Officer Kister carried Kourtney to another car. They didn’t wait for an ambulance — they drove as fast as they could to the hospital.

At the hospital, doctors saw that Jennifer was close to death. Her body temperature was so low that her heart was barely beating. She was quickly airlifted to another hospital where a special doctor could perform a warming blood transfusion — a rare treatment where blood is removed, warmed, and then returned to the body.

Doctors made two small cuts in her body and began warming her blood. Slowly, her heart started beating again. But she soon fell into a coma, and doctors warned her parents that even if she woke up, she might have serious brain damage.

Miraculously, after some time, Jennifer woke up — with no brain damage at all. Both girls had frostbite and had to stay in the hospital for months, going through physical therapy to walk again. But they survived.

Years later, in 2017 — 20 years after that icy morning — Jennifer and Kourtney reunited with Officer Kister and Officer Wagner, the two policemen who had saved their lives. With tears in their eyes, the sisters thanked them, saying they owed them everything.

Jennifer said, “Police are good, God is good, and sometimes we all need a reminder of that.”
