Shirley Temple Meets The Beatles (1964)

0

On August 19, 1964, The Beatles opened their first major U.S. tour with a concert at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. Backstage that night, they had a special visitor — former child movie star Shirley Temple Black — who came with her 10-year-old daughter, Lori.

Paul McCartney had invited Shirley and her daughter to come and meet the band. When she arrived, George Harrison didn’t want to take a picture at first, but after some persuasion, he agreed. Shirley’s husband, Charles Black, took the now-famous photo of Shirley, her daughter, and all four Beatles backstage.

Also visiting backstage that night were folk singer Joan Baez and Beatles publicist Derek Taylor. The atmosphere at the concert was wild — fans screamed non-stop, and the police had trouble controlling the crowd.

A few years later, when The Beatles were creating the cover for their 1967 album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” they wanted to include Shirley Temple’s image among the 58 famous faces on the cover. Shirley agreed — but she was the only person who asked to hear the album first before giving permission.
