Paulette Goddard, seen here with her third (or maybe second) husband, Burgess Meredith, was a smart woman who came from humble beginnings. While her acting career wasn’t the most famous, she ended up leaving behind a fortune worth millions.
She got married at 17 to an older, wealthy man, but after just 2 years, they divorced, and she walked away with a big payout. Her second marriage was to Charlie Chaplin, who played a big part in making her a star. There’s some debate about whether they were officially married or just common law, with Chaplin saying they weren’t really married.
Paulette had a knack for attracting admirers who gave her expensive gifts, including a famous necklace with 570 stones, mostly made from diamonds from engagement rings. This helped, as she wasn’t well-liked by her coworkers, and her acting career started to slow down. Edith Head, a famous costume designer, even said Paulette was one of the few actresses she didn’t get along with.
Her third marriage was to Burgess Meredith. One night, while they were out, their taxi was attacked by an angry mob who called Burgess a communist. Paulette joked, “Shall I roll down the window and hit them with my diamonds, Bugsy?” This marriage lasted 5 years.
Her last husband was the rich and older writer, Eric Maria Remarque, famous for writing All Quiet on the Western Front. They were married for 12 years until his death, and he left her a huge fortune, including properties and artwork in Europe.

When she died in 1990, Paulette left $20 million to New York University.
