Today, as I was heading home for a quick bite to eat

Today, as I was heading home for a quick bite to eat, I noticed an elderly man standing by the road with his walker, thumb out, trying to hitch a ride. Something about the scene made me pause, so I made a U-turn and went back to see if he needed help. When I asked if he was okay, he told me he was trying to get to the dollar store about 1.5 miles away.

I immediately thought he might be in need of some food, so I offered him a ride.

As we drove, I asked him a few questions:

“How old are you?”

“93,” he replied.

“What’s your name?”

“Mike.”

“Are you married?”

“Yes, my wife is 94. Her name is Doris.”

“Does she know you’re out?”

“Nope, she probably hasn’t even started looking for me yet.”

Curious, I asked, “Why are we going to the store?”

He smiled and said, “My wife and I like to share a Hershey chocolate bar every night, and we’re out, so I need to buy 30 Hershey Bars.”

Before dropping him off, I gave him my card and told him, “Next time you need some chocolate, no need to hitch a ride. Just give me a call. I look forward to meeting Doris.
