People often misunderstand the medical profession because patients sometimes have to undress for exams or surgery. But the truth is, there’s nothing sexual about it.
Since I’ve been in a relationship with a urologist, I’ve been asked hundreds of times, “Doesn’t it bother you that she touches male patients’ genitals daily? She must have seen thousands of them by now!”
It doesn’t bother me. And yes, she also examines female patients too.
What people forget is that these are patients’ genitals, often because something is wrong with them. Doctors see them as part of the body that needs medical attention — it’s not about anything sexual. (“There’s nothing attractive about a part of the body that’s infected!”)
Doctors and surgeons preserve a patient’s dignity by being professionals. That’s all it is.
