I was in line at a fast food restaurant, and I noticed the line wasn’t moving. There were people working in the back, so I started paying attention to what was going on. I saw the cashier talking to a young couple in front of me. The girl ordered her food, and the cashier smiled and very quietly said, “I’m deaf, can you please talk slower?” The girl smiled back and said, “Oh, of course!” and she slowed down her order. But the cashier still couldn’t quite catch it, so he smiled again, got a pen and paper, and asked them to write it down. Without hesitation, the couple did it, with no impatience at all, just kindness.
I kept watching to see how others would react to him, wondering if anyone would get frustrated about waiting longer. To my surprise, every person was kind and patient. They all wrote down their orders, smiled at him, and didn’t complain.
I’m sharing this story for two reasons. First, because this young man, who is deaf, has a job. Even though he faces challenges, he works every day and does it with a smile. That’s truly inspiring. I also have to give credit to the restaurant for giving him this opportunity.
Second, in a world where we often see people being unkind to others, it was so refreshing to see so many small acts of kindness. People forgot their own problems, even their hunger, and showed compassion. This was a powerful reminder that life isn’t just about us—it’s about others too.
I’ll never forget that moment.
